Rebound Effect

The rebound effect, in the context of GHG emissions, refers to the phenomenon where improved energy efficiency leads to reduced energy use but, due to changes in behavior or other systemic factors, this reduction is partially or fully offset by increased consumption of the same or other goods or services. This means that the overall environmental benefits of an efficiency improvement might be less than initially anticipated.
